The Society for the Lying-In Hospital was an American maternity hospital situated at 305 Second Avenue between East 17th and 18th Streets in the Stuyvesant Square neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Now known as Rutherford Place, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Lying-in is an archaic term for childbirth (referring to the month-long bed rest prescribed for postpartum confinement). This hospital was "said to account for 60 percent of all births in Manhattan." Some of their staff did medical research.
