Upland South

The Upland South or Upper South is the inland part of the Southern, and lower Midwestern states in contrast to the low-lying coastal plains of the Tidewater region and Deep South. The term "Upper South" is defined by the Southern states that are geographically north of the Lower or Deep South, whereas the "Upland South" is defined by landforms, history, and culture. Not corresponding well to state lines, it typically consists of North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, northern Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma, southern Missouri, western Maryland, southern Illinois, southern Indiana, and southern Ohio.
