Ivan Lendl was the two-time defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to Jonas Svensson. Mats Wilander defeated Henri Leconte 7–5, 6–2, 6–1 in the final to win his third and final French Open men's singles title. Leconte remains the last Frenchman to reach the French Open Men's Singles final.
