Roger Federer was the defending champion, and won in the final 7–6(7–2), 6–4, 6–4, against Fernando González, becoming the first man since Björn Borg in 1980 to win a Grand Slam tournament without dropping a set and the first (and so far only) to do it in a Grand Slam played on hard courts. This was also the first Grand Slam appearance of future US Open champion Marin Čilić who lost in the first round.
