The Battle of Block Island was a nighttime naval encounter that took place on April 6, 1776 during the American Revolutionary War between the Continental Navy, which was returning from a successful raid on Nassau in The Bahamas, and HMS Glasgow, a Royal Navy dispatch boat. Glasgow escaped capture by the fleet of seven ships under the command of Commodore Esek Hopkins, although the ship sustained significant damage in the encounter.
