Copland (operating system)

Copland was a project at Apple Computer to create an updated version of the classic Macintosh operating system. It was to have introduced protected memory, preemptive multitasking and a number of new underlying operating system features, yet still be compatible with existing Mac software. As originally planned, a follow-up release known as Gershwin would add multithreading and other advanced features. In 2008, PCWorld magazine named Copland on a list of the biggest project failures in IT history.
