H. antiquus ranged from the Iberian Peninsula to the British Isles to the Rhine River to Greece. The Cretan Dwarf Hippopotamus (H. creutzburgi) is believed to have evolved from H. antiquus through the process of insular dwarfism on the island of Crete.
