The municipality has a population of 21,947 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 872.13 square kilometres (336.73 sq mi) of which 109.22 km2 (42.17 sq mi) is water. The population density is 28.77 inhabitants per square kilometre (74.5/sq mi). The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
