Keita, Niger

Keita is a town and commune in Niger, 600 kilometers north-east of the national capital, Niamey. It is the capital of theKeita Department, within the Tahoua Region, with a population of 10,631 as of 2012, an increase from 8,633 in 2001). The town is in the semi-arid Sahel, and is threatened by famine. Former foreign minister of Niger Aïchatou Boulama Kané was born in Keita in 1955.
