Inflorescences bear up to eight flowers. The fruits are ellipsoid, up to 2.6 centimetres (1 in) long. The specific epithet pubicalyx is from the Latin meaning "soft-haired calyx". Habitat is lowland mixed dipterocarp forest from sea-level to 50 metres (160 ft) altitude. M. pubicalyx is endemic to Borneo.
