Maroneia

Maroneia (Greek: Μαρώνεια, Bulgarian: Марония) is a village and a former municipality in the Rhodope regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Maroneia-Sapes, of which it is a municipal unit. Population 6,350 (2011). The seat of the municipality was in Xylagani. In December 1877 Captain Petko Voyvoda overthrew the Ottoman rule and established a free administration in the town.
