Samar (province)

Samar (Waray-Waray: Probinsya han Samar, Filipino: Lalawigan ng Samar, Cebuano: Lalawigan sa Samar, formerly known as Western Samar) is a province in the Philippines located in the region of Eastern Visayas. Its capital is Catbalogan City. Samar, along with Leyte province, was created after the historical province of the same name was split into two independent provinces in 1768. Samar province occupied the entire island of Samar and its adjacent islands until 1965, when it was partitioned into three provinces (Northern Samar, Eastern Samar and "Western" Samar).
