Whangaroa

Whangaroa is a locality on the harbour of the same name in Northland, New Zealand. Whangaroa is 8 km north-west from Kaeo and 35 km northwest from Kerikeri. The harbour is almost landlocked and is popular both as a fishing spot in its own right and as a base for deep-sea fishing. In June 1823 Wesleydale, the first Wesleyan mission in New Zealand, was established at Whangaroa. During a skirmish Hongi Hika was shot in the chest by one of his warriors. On 6 March 1828 Hongi Hika died at Whangaroa.
