The idea for opening University of economics in Varna, Bulgaria was conceived in 1911 when the foundation of the building was laid. The university was founded on 14 May 1920. It is the oldest university for economic sciences in Bulgaria and the second oldest university in the country after Sofia University, which was founded in 1888. As of 2012, there were 12,000 students in UE - Varna.
