Actaeon (ship)
Actaeon was a ship that was wrecked without loss of life on 28 October 1822 in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel in Bass Strait, between Tasmania and mainland Australia. The Actaeon, a ship of 305 tons was built at Fort Gloster, India in 1815 and owned by J. Scott & Co. of Calcutta. It left Mauritius on 6 September 1822 bound for Sydney under the command of Captain Mackay. It struck the rocks in D'Entrecasteaux Channel around midnight on 28 October and the crew abandoned ship. The Longboat containing the officers and some of the crew made for Hobart where the wreck was reported. The brigs Deveron and Prince Leopold were sent to salvage as much cargo as possible and pick up the remaining crew.
