It lies 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Bradford, 7 miles (11 km) south-west of Leeds and 1 mile (2 km) north of Dewsbury, near the M62 motorway. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in 2011 its two wards (Batley East and Batley West) had a combined population of 38,573.
