Having served as assistant engineer at A&M Studios from 1981 until 1986, Kaplan's sound engineering or mixing work includes Joni Mitchell's Wild Things Run Fast, Barbra Streisand's Yentl, The Carpenters' An Old Fashioned Christmas, Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill, Vesta Williams' Vesta, Johnny Gill's Chemistry, and the "We Are The World" sessions.
