Hercoglossidae was established by Spath in 1927 for smooth, involute nautiloids characterized by a suture with differentiated elements, known from the Upper Jurassic to the Oligocene. Hercoglossids make up part of the Nautilid superfamily Nautilaceae. (Kummel 1964)
