Western Australia produced approximately 50% of all Australian mineral and petroleum sales, which made up 89% of the state's merchandise exports in 2008. In 2008, gold was ranked fifth in the list of resources exported by Western Australia in regard to value, behind iron ore, crude oil, alumina and LNG, with a value of A$4.4 billion. In 2008, the state produced 4,200,000 ounces of gold, or 131.421 tonnes. All up, in 2008, Western Australian gold mines employed 14,459 people on their mine sites.
