Sergi Bruguera was the defending champion, and he successfully defended his title by defeating compatriot Alberto Berasategui in the first ever all-Spanish men's singles final. Pete Sampras had the chance to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slam tournaments at once, having won the previous year's Wimbledon, U.S. Open and this year's Australian Open titles. He lost to Jim Courier in the quarterfinals.
