Marin Čilić was the defending champion, but lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. Djokovic went on to win the title, defeating Roger Federer in the final, 6–4, 5–7, 6–4, 6–4. By reaching the final, Djokovic became the third man to reach all four major Grand Slam finals in the same year in the Open Era after Rod Laver and Federer. Earlier that year, he won the Australian Open and Wimbledon and lost to Stan Wawrinka at Roland Garros.
