American Urban Radio Networks
The American Urban Radio Networks (AURN) is the result of a merger between the National Black Network, founded by Unity Broadcasting in 1973, and the Sheridan Broadcasting Corporation, founded in 1972. After becoming the first African Americans to purchase a group of radio stations (WILD, Boston, WAMO, Pittsburgh & WUFO, Buffalo), SBC purchased a 49% interest in the Mutual Black Network. In October 1979 SBC became 100% owners of Mutual Black Network, founded in 1972 by the Mutual Broadcasting System. The name was then changed to the Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN). The merger of NBN and SBN took place in 1991. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, AURN is the only African American owned network radio company in the United States.
