Cambodians in the Greater Toronto Area

Toronto's Cambodian-Canadian population comprises 6,000 people. In 1999, 98% of Cambodians in Toronto identified themselves as Khmer people. Cambodians, most of whom arrived in Toronto and Montreal, began arriving to Canada as a result of the 1970s Cambodian Genocide which took approximately 3.8 million lives. The immigrant community was centered in Jane and Finch, and as they diversified in population and status, many relocated into other areas such as Maple, Rexdale, Newmarket, and Hamilton.
