County (Taiwan)

Counties (Chinese: 縣; pinyin: xiàn; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: koān) are one of administrative divisions of the Republic of China, which consists of Taiwan Province and Fujian Province. They are directly governed by the central government after the provinces were streamlined in 1998 and 1956 respectively. Legally, counties with a population of over two million can become a quasi-municipality (準直轄市).
