Geographically, it encompasses 11 counties in Western Pennsylvania, and its cathedral is located in downtown Pittsburgh. It was formed in 1865 by dividing the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. Dorsey W. M. McConnell was consecrated and seated as its current bishop in the fall of 2012.
