Islamic State of Iraq

The Islamic State of Iraq (ISI; Arabic: دولة العراق الإسلامية‎‎ Dawlat al-ʿIrāq al-ʾIslāmiyyah) (commonly referred to as al-Qaeda in Iraq) was a militant Islamist group that aimed to establish an Islamic state in Sunni, Arab-majority areas of Iraq during the Iraq War. It was formed on 15 October 2006 from the merger of a number of Iraqi insurgent groups, including Al-Qaeda in Iraq and its Mujahideen Shura Council allies. In April 2013, ISI transformed itself into the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, ISIS, IS), which is still active today.
