There was a resurgence of interest in the song when the Paul Whiteman Orchestra's 1933 recording was used in the 1973 Oscar-winning film Paper Moon. The song also featured in and lent its name to the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "It's Only a Paper Moon", being performed in that episode by James Darren. A verse from this song was used by the Japanese author Haruki Murakami as the theme for his prize-winning epic "1Q84". A verse from this song was also used by Tennessee Williams in his play "A Streetcar Named Desire", which was published in 1947 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948.
