At the 2011 census, Lilydale had a population of 15,649. It began as a town within the Shire of Lillydale and is also notable as the burial site of Dame Nellie Melba (Lilydale Cemetery). It is both a residential area of metropolitan Melbourne and an industrial area on the city's rural-urban fringe.
