The club played in the Football League from 1997 until relegation to the Conference Premier in 2012. The club was formed in 1874 and play home games at the 6,355 capacity Moss Rose stadium. The 2011–12 season was Macclesfield Town's 15th consecutive season in the Football League and their 13th consecutive season in the fourth tier of English football which, until their relegation, made them the then longest-standing members of League Two.
