Tharuhat is one of the provinces established by the new constitution of Nepal which was adopted on 20 September 2015 and referred to as Province No. 5. Government of Nepal and ruling class Bahun and Chhetri Hindu elites carved Kailali and Kanchanpur district out of Tharuhat as their population held the majority in those two districts who migrated there in recent years from nearby hills of Northern Nepal. Tharu people along with other Madhesi people are protesting such moves of elites and demanding Autonomous Tharuhat Province with full sovereign decentralized power within Nepal in Western Madhesh .
