She was laid down on 19 December 1970 at San Diego, California, by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Corporation and launched on 2 October 1971. She was commissioned on 27 May 1972, Commander Warren R. Ellsworth in command. The ship was named after Barnstable County, Massachusetts.
