Vasoactive intestinal peptide stimulates chick pineal melatonin production and interacts with other stimulatory and inhibitory agents but does not show alpha 1-adrenergic potentiation.Vasoactive intestinal peptide-like immunoreactive nerve fibers in the pineal gland of the sheep.Density of peptide histidine-isoleucine- and vasoactive intestinal peptide-immunoreactive nerve fibers in the sheep pineal gland is not affected by superior cervical ganglionectomy.Vasoactive intestinal peptide stimulates N-acetyltransferase and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase activities and melatonin production in cultured rat but not in Syrian hamster pineal glands.Beta-adrenergic stimulation increases cAMP and melatonin production in ovine pinealocyte cultures.
